# Follower Items

## A Note on This System

The follower item system is currently a partial rework. Four follower types now generate items through the mechanics described on this page: the Blacksmith, the Scribe, the Runemaster, and the Praise singer. The remaining follower types will be updated and added to this system over time. Some items and followers lack icons, while other followers have wrong icons, these things will be changed with time.

***

## Item Slots

Every character has a limited number of item slots determined by their rank. A rank 1 character can hold one item. A rank 9 character can hold nine. A character must have a free slot before any item can be granted, regardless of the source.

Items are granted as traits attached to the character and remain until removed. A character at their slot limit will be skipped by all item systems until a slot opens up.

***

## Cooldowns

Each follower source has its own independent cooldown. One source granting an item does not delay another.

| Source | Cooldown |
| ------------- | ------------------------ |
| Blacksmith | 5 turns |
| Scribe | 5 turns |
| Runemaster | 5 turns |
| Bard or Skald | 6 turns (victories only) |

## The Blacksmith

The Blacksmith grants items on your character's turn, every 5 turns.

**Access** requires one of the following:

* The character has the Blacksmith follower skill
* The character is the governor of a region containing any forge-type building

**Item tiers** available depend on whether the character is a governor and what forge buildings are present in their region.

All characters with smith access draw from the common pool. Governors with forge buildings also access the legendary pool. Governors with a Stadfordscir forge specifically also access the master forge pool.

**Buildings that unlock legendary items:**

| Building | Type |
| ------------------------ | ------------ |
| Blacksmith | Forge |
| Forge | Forge |
| Great Forge | Forge |
| Small Forge | Workshop |
| Commercial Forge | Workshop |
| Metalworking District | Workshop |

| Tool Workshop | Tools |
| Tool Foundry | Tools |
| Iron Artisan | Tools |
| Iron Working Industry | Tools |
| Stadfordscir Blacksmith | Master Forge |
| Stadfordscir Forge | Master Forge |
| Stadfordscir Great Forge | Master Forge |

**Buildings that unlock master forge items (in addition to legendary):**

Only the Stadfordscir Blacksmith, Stadfordscir Forge, and Stadfordscir Great Forge unlock the master forge item pool.

## The Scribe

The Scribe grants items on your character's turn, every 5 turns. This follower type is for **non-Norse and non-Danish factions** only. Norse and Danish factions use the Runemaster instead.

**Access** requires one of the following:

* The character has the Scribe follower skill
* The character is the governor of a region containing any scribe-type building

**Quality score** determines which item tiers are available. It combines two sources:

1. The scribe buildings present in the governor's region
2. A bonus from your faction's Clergy population

| Building | Score |
| ---------------------- | ----- |
| Scribes | +2 |

## The Runemaster

The Runemaster functions identically to the Scribe but is exclusive to **Norse and Danish factions**. It grants items every 5 turns and uses its own quality score based entirely on Norse cultural buildings. Clergy population does not affect the Runemaster.

**Access** requires one of the following:

* The character has their faction's specific Runemaster follower
* The character is the governor of a region with Norse cultural buildings

**Quality score** is based on the following buildings:

| Building | Score |
| ----------------------- | ----- |
| Law Field | +2 |
| Thing Field | +4 |
| Thing Court | +6 |
| Outdoor Assembly | +2 |
| Grandstand | +4 |

## The Praise Singer

The Praise Singer grants items through battle rather than on a turn timer. Every victory with a qualifying character triggers a potential item grant, subject to a 6-turn cooldown between grants.

Defeat does the opposite. Losing a battle with a character who holds any Praise Singer item removes one of those items at random. There is no cooldown on losses: every defeat is eligible.

Norse and Danish characters with the Praise Singer follower draw from the Skald item pool. All other characters with the Praise Singer follower draw from the Bard pool.

#### Bard Items

| Item | Eligibility |
| --------------------- | ---------------- |
| Lute | All |

## Summary

1. **Rank determines how many items a character can hold.** A rank 1 character holds one item. Build rank deliberately if you want your generals and governors accumulating items over the campaign.
2. **Governors benefit most from the system.** Smith and Scribe access both have a governor path that bypasses the need for a specific follower, as long as the right buildings are in their region. Stationing experienced governors in developed settlements maximises item generation.
3. **Build for the items you want.** Scribe tier 3 items require a score of 7 from your scholarly buildings and Clergy population combined. Runemaster tier 3 requires score 7 from Norse cultural buildings alone. Plan your construction around the tiers you are targeting.
4. **Protect your Bard and Skald characters.** Any loss strips a random item from them. Keep characters with valuable Bard or Skald items away from battles they are likely to lose.
5. **You can only hold one sword.** Any character who receives a sword is locked out of all other swords permanently. Legendary and master forge swords are the most powerful smith items, so choose carefully which character receives one first.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://thrones-reforged.gitbook.io/thrones-reforged-docs/follower-items.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
